Hi, I just registered so I could give an idea. I saw this in an old gardening book my father passed on to me when I got my first house in Boston with a tiny yard. The Book is The American Horticultural Society, Illustrated Encyclopedia of Gardening, Vegetables. Library of Congress # 80-80416, published in 1974,1976, 1980. My Dad was an organic gardener before it was "cool" to be an organic gardener. Anyway, check the book out if you can find it on Amazon or something, page 67 shows how to build a vertical garden on wheels. Very simply you build a box with casters on the bottom, place PVC pipes with holes vertically in the middle, then using heavy plastic and wooden lathes cover the sides. fill with loose potting soil (hopefully organic, composted) and cut slits in the plastic to place your plants. You can rotate the garden so both sides get sun as needed. And yes indeed it will help insulation if you plant a wall, but note that too much moisture will cause damage to the inside of your home, so make sure that you ventilate well.

Yes, a living wall seems like an easier proposition outside. I know that it's possible to have this inside but how could you be sure that the moisture from the wall wouldn't cause mold issues eventually?

There is some more information about the company (The Shimizu Corp.) that put up the two walls pictured in the last post on TreeHugger.com. It looks like they charge about $696 per square meter.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to try something like this on your own though. If you do attempt this project please come back and post about it!

I would think much, much less than $696 per square meter! Granted those people are probably professionals.

Patrick Blanc designed the vertical gardens at the Musée du Quai Branly and his contact info is listed on his website.

Amazing!

Thanks! That is just amazing. I would have never thought to do that. I wonder how long it would take to get the wall that lush and full? I live in the desert, so I don't know how that would work. But it is still a great idea.

hahaha of course gardener's supply caught up with the trend. my question is ... how wet is that couch gonna get when that lower water reservoir needs to be emptied? lol

although thanks for the link! I hadn't seen that they'd added new items. I'm always looking at what they've got and trying to figure out if I can make it at home cheaper I think that "plant ladder" might be a neat project"

I bet that home made plant picture frames would be a neat way to go - maybe not even so big as that monster from gardeners. some combination of peat and coarser material with chicken wire over it... and if left vertical while getting established.. then flipped horizontal.. it might just work as a "smaller scale" plant wall I might just give it a try!
