Awesome Euphorbia Guide

Posted 02-03-2008 at 04:18 PM by smgardener
There's a fantastic new guide to Euphorbias over at Dave's Garden.

Quote:
Euphorbia canariensis- there are few more elegant columnar Euphorbias than this moderately tall (6'-10') 5-sided columnar, blue-green to bright green plant. This native from the Canaray Islands has many low branches, but the branches themselves rarely branch again, giving the effect of a plant with numerous solitary columns. However, the branches come off but a few suckering trunks in a graceful curve upward, often with the lowest point of the curve touching the ground.
Paghat also has a nice page specifically on the 'firestick' euphorbias.

Garden Gnomes!

Posted 12-10-2007 at 09:21 PM by smgardener
You know what I've never really understood? Garden gnomes. I mean, I sort of think they're tacky on the one hand, but really cool on the other. I don't have any myself, but they certainly are part of the gardening zeitgeist.

I'm thinking of starting a gardening gnome thread... Anyone have photos they could contribute?

Compost Tea: A Pretty Good Guide

Compost tea is a great product. What it is is compost seeped in water and oxygenated. Two things happen, the nutrients are extracted and the microbes multiply. Compost Tea can then be used as a fertilizer, soil conditioner, foliar feeder, and disease or pest repellent.
As a follow on to my The Definitive One Page Guide to Composting article, here's a home brew method I picked up from The Backyard Gardening Blog.

A bit much for my limited space, but seems like it would work!

Update:
Adding more links, wikipedia article about compost tea, and what is really the definitive guide to brewing compost tea, the Fine Gardening article on the subject.

Pollinator Protection Act

Posted 11-01-2007 at 09:00 PM by smgardener

I had no idea, but going down a rabbit hole on Organic Gardening about the bee crisis led me to the Xerces society page, where I learned that there are two bills currently in the senate to help out with the current pollinator problem.
Quote:
The first is Senator Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) Pollinator Protection Act (there is no bill number yet) of 2007, which was introduced on June 26th, 2007. This exciting bill not only addresses Colony Collapse Disorder in honey bees, but also the decline of native pollinators in North America. This bill will enhance funding for research on the parasites, pathogens, toxins, and other environmental factors that affect honey bees and native bees. It supports research into the biology of native bees and their role in crop pollination, diversifying the pollinators upon which agriculture relies.

The Pollinator Protection Act of 2007 works
