My husband, 6 year old daughter and I have just moved to Puerto Cabeza, Nicaragua. My husband is going to be drilling clean wells for villages all over the N.E. corner of this country. Meanwhile, I am looking at trying to start a huge garden and orchards here in the area. I have been an avid gardener in years past in Oregon, and California. Frankly, I am overwhelmed with trying to do anything in this area. The native people here do not garden, and have very few plantations. Alot of the plantations were destroyed with Hurricane Felix last year, and noone cares enough to try and replant. What little the people here know about plants and trees are so obserd, that I no longer ask them any questions. Is there anyone around that can help me out with my thousand of questions. Alot of what I know with gardening is useless here. What I am realizing, is that alot more can grow here, then is presently being grown. I would love to be able to introduce alot more fruit trees and vegtables. I doubt the local people would eat them, but there are alot of americans around that would fight for some kind of varity down here. Would love some input. |

Welcome! I hope you will be able to find some useful gardening tips. I've never been to Nicaragua personally so I don't know about growing conditions there but hopefully someone here has. What types of food have typically been grown there?

plant options?
I'm headed to a villiage north of Puerto Cabezas in a few weeks to help rebuild a house. I heard there is a small community garden there and was hoping to bring some seed. Have you found any info about what will grow and what locals might want?
