beneficial bacteria

i read an article about using beneficial bacteria cocktails to improve root health. im relatively new at growing and have a small indoor vegetable and herb garden in my closet. im using florescence and the plants are in a garden soil, perlite, vermiculite mix. i got this stuff called oreganicsxl by arora innovations. there were little directions on the pouch, all it said was to mix the package with a gallon of water and then mix 1/4 cup of that mixture in another gallon of water. so i had a few questions about the stuff. 1. can it be mixed with tap water (what with chlorine and all) or must it be distilled? 2. how often should it be used? every watering? 3. can it be mixed with my nutrient solution in the same watering can and left to set between watering? 4. also... i am using a chemical nutrient solution. miracle grow. i thought i read a clip somewhere that said chemical fertilizers can harm beneficial bacteria... is this true?
thanks a ton!

That's a really interesting post. I wish there were some answers following it.

The "tap water" question arises for me quite a lot. I mean, when I water my garden with the hose I'm using tap water, and the birds drink it, as do the wasps which appear to be very thirsty little creatures.

I saw a great video on composting, or else I read a great article on it on some web site in addition to the great thread on composting here, and learned that the bacteria in compost are amazing at nutralizing threats, even capable of isolating toxins like... I forget, I hate how much I forget ... but cadmium? lead? that kind of thing. So I think that the fact you are adding good bacteria is beneficial even if there are other things which aren't organic that you are also using.

If you intend to use tap water and are still worried about the chlorine, if you leave the water site in a bucket for 24hrs most of the chlorine will have disappeared and you shouldn't have a problem using it then

Lanab is kind of on the right track. Beneficial bacteria is everywhere in the tank. The water, the gravel/sand, plants decoration, glass, tubes, powerheads, filters, filter media. There is about the same on the filter media as is in the gravel. Be it an undergravel filter much will be on the filter and in the rock, yet there is still bacteria on the tubes, powerheads, decorations and glass.

There is no way to put an exact percentage on any since different tanks are set up differently. Tanks a some fish stores have no gravel and have no filter just recirculating water from a holding tank that is filtered.

Let's just say you don't want to clean out all of the gravel, change the filter cartridge and clean the filter itself out all in the same day. Although there will still be bacteria, your tank may cloud up due to the lower levels.

If I had to guess I would have to say the gravel around 30, filter and media 30-40, glass 10, decorations 10 pumps and tubes and other 10.

Sathya... are you sure you're talking about gardening? It sounds more like a fish tank bit of talk.

Oh, I see. Sathya's post is a cover for the links it contains. So so sad.

Beneficial bacteria have also found their uses in other places. In today’s world, the environment and its related issues are steadily gaining a lot of importance. It has been seen that helpful bacteria are useful in dissolving organic sludge from water, breaking down the growth of algae, reducing the various noxious odors such as hydrogen sulfide odors, reducing ammonia levels, promoting faster growth of fish in the water body, and also defeating unhealthy bacterial growth in the water body.

Thus, it can be seen that Mother Nature has effectively created many such means of ensuring that we remain protected from harm. And one such means provided by Mother Nature is beneficial bacteria or good bacteria or helpful bacteria.

Okay, I'm sorry. Maybe Regina is a real person. I'm very sorry I misunderstood the other post. I just got a half dozen fake followers on Twitter and I'm oversensitive.

Please forgive me, Regina.

Beneficial Bacteria are essential helpers in the garden pond and for pond filters. They munch on pond fish waste and other organic matter and convert deadly ammonia into first nitrites and then into nitrates thus being an integral part of pond filtration. The nitrates are taken up by the pond plants. This cycle makes the Beneficial Bacteria essential to the health and well being of the water and the creatures of the pond including Koi and all other pond fish, and it also helps reduce problem nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.
