Georgia sand...what grass will grow best in it?
I am living in coastal Georgia and the soil is very sandy. What kind of grass do you think will grow best? I have thought about Bermuda.

its very hard to grow grass on sandy soil as the water drains very quickly and has very low nutrients. what you can do is improve the soil with some organic matters and topsoil.
P.s l have not grown any grass on sandy soil so l cannot tell you but some one here will help. |

Bermuda grass would be a good choice for this area. It is a warm season grass and will do well in the spring summer and early fall. You need to amend the soil though add some organic material 3 cubic yards per 1000 square feet . I would use peat moss, shredded pine bark or well rotted sawdust. Of course if you could afford it I would remove and replace the first 6" with a good topsoil but amending is a lot cheaper and will help.
St Augustine is also a very good choice.Where I come from in Miami we used it all the time and made a very nice lawn. I know that currently the Georgia area is suffer from a drought. All turf grass needs a good amount of moisture to do well. There is a really good reference on Georgia Lawns that you can get to on line is put out by the Cooperative Education Service at the University Of Georgia here is the link. LAWNS IN GEORGIA Good luck with your new lawn.

The sandy beaches around the East Anglian coast are held together by Marram grass, but perhaps it's not very beautiful in a garden! Here's a link:
