The best advice I was given was don't over water wait until the roots look thirsty, and find a window sill to place it in. You may need to try multiple spots before your orchid is happy.

Hello Brandan, I know nothing about orchids. But you should have good luck
with gingers of all kinds. I have about four varieties of gingers but this past winter they got bit by a freeze. Not sure yet which ones will survive. I have string of pearls, pink butterfly ginger, and white butterfly ginger. I am close to the east coast, near St. Augustine but about an hour inland. You might try those Gaillardia daisy.
