Home and Garden Roundup for Week of 2/18/2008

A weekly roundup of the top stories from the Home & Garden sections of leading newspapers around the country.

The Los Angeles Times Home and Garden Section's article, "Letting Nature Rule" describes a wild and exotic garden, designed 30 years ago, that will be closing at the end of the month.
Quote:
"The garden had a tremendous impact on California gardeners and landscape designers. It demonstrated a freedom of spirit and embraced nature," says garden designer Pamela Berstler, who co-owns West L.A.-based Flower to the People.

"John did for horticulture what Jack Kerouac did for literature. He brought to the West a style that endures," says Jim Marshall, general manager of Suncrest Nurseries Inc., Watsonville.

The Miami Herald Gardening Section reminds gardeners to properly clean pruning shears in order to prevent spreading disease.

Quote:
When pruning diseased branches, make sure you sterilize the pruning blades with a 10 per cent bleach solution or rubbing alcohol for 15 seconds or more before pruning healthy branches.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer NW Gardens reports on the big winners at the 20th Annual Northwest Flower & Garden Show.

Quote:
"Sommarstuga: Summer Living, Simply and Sustainably," designed by Janine Anderson and Terry LeLievre for the Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association, picked up the coveted top award, sponsored by Sunset Western Living.

From the garden description: "Screened by a backdrop of trees, the birding enthusiasts in our cottage savor summer -- and the sun -- amid clusters of largely low-water-use plants, helping plants -- and the planet -- by providing healthy soil and deep, slowly delivered irrigation."

The Dallas Morning News Home/Gardening section helps you to figure out how to best care for your perennials between growing seasons.

Quote:
All plants come equipped with mechanisms for shedding dead foliage when the new growth pushes through in the spring. The problem is they don't clean themselves as neatly or as soon as we might like. Cutting back the dead or withered foliage helps tidy the garden and prepare for next season.

Dallas Morning News -- Coneflowers

The New York Times Home & Garden section says it time to repot and make cuttings, now that spring is on the way.

Quote:
It occurred to me, as I stared into Mattie’s blue eyes, that houseplants, which often come into your life without asking, are more than a little like cats. Antiques and rugs can collect dust, while waiting to be picked up by their rightful heirs (Mom made a list of everything, right down to the turkey platter). But plants and animals need food and water — and the kind of attention that verges on love, if you’re not careful.

Sylwia Kapuscinski for The New York Times -- Pelargonium
