Need Bougainvillea help!
I just on a whim picked up a Bougainvillea at a huge nursery sale. This plant will end up being a mostly indoor plant, I plan to repot it and keep it in my hottub/sun room. Any tips for growing these??? I know they vine, and I am willing to let it grow, training it around part of the wall if necessary. Never grew one of these before though....

I've never seen one these plant being grown inside... I'm curious to see how that's going to go. We have a lot of these growing in my neck of the woods (including in my yard) and they seem to do best with lots of sun (at least 1/2 day) and not too much water.

If they like to be dry, it should work in my favor. I do need to repot the thing though....the guy at the nursery said they also like humidity, so the hottub room sounded good...humid and bright in there, and he said they are also evergreen. I read that if it is too dark for them they will drop leaves. We'll see how it goes. I was surprised to see them selling it at a nursery in Washington State, as it didn't seem to fit our growing style here.

This sounds like a really cool way to use this plant. I bet it adds a nice tropical feeling to your bathroom. Please keep us posted about how it goes.

I used to raise them in my commercial greenhouse, and they did drop A LOT of leaves in the winter during cold cloudy weather. But when the day's started getting longer, they re-foliated and were prettier than ever.
Night temps in the greenhouse ran around 50 degrees, which is probably cooler than your sun room, so yours may not drop leaves, but don't be concerned if it does. |
