Perennial Gardening

Does no one on here care for just perennial flower gardening. I am living in
Central Florida and becoming quite successful at growing a cottage flower
garden with the help of a lot of soil enhancement, cow manure, and 10 10 10.
I have a perennial garden which I started from seed last October which is now blooming with pink stocks. And the hollyhocks are not far behind. I have Dames
Rocket, Canterbury Bells, Cupids Dart, and Foxglove yet to bloom. This may be
the first year I will have blooming Foxglove. I find if you plant in the Fall, and manage to get enough cold freezes, many things will grow here. Also you have
to enrich the soil constantly to keep it loose and crumbly.

Sounds like a nice mix of plants. I dont have much luck getting perennial seeds to fruition. Part of it is the heat here - in the summer. Ocala isn't too far from Palatka. I've been to Palatka and from what I saw there was a LOT of farms and the soil was rich. The soil here has a lot of sand and clay depending on which part of the yard. The little 2/1 I rent in the center of town is right where a dump used to be many years ago before it was abolished. I too have to ameliorate the soil before planting by adding pete moss and vermiculite and perlite + fertilizers. I try to use organic forms of nitrogen.

Too hot here for foxgloves. I've tried. Oh they'd do OK now but as soon as June - July roll around - forget about it. Unless there is a trick to it..... :-[

I have a perennial bed with only easy-care plants, as I'm not physically able to get out there and work in it anymore. In addition to several thousand daffodils, there are other spring bulbs, many cultivars of iris and Daylilies, plus peonies, sedums, coneflowers, garden phlox, Oriental lilies, Asian lilies, tiger lilies, Shasta Daisies, and old fashioned rose mallow, with Silver Queen artemesia and Bronze Fennel in the background. There are also several shrubs...forsythia, lilac, wigelia, crape myrtle and a gray dogwood.
There is something blooming all the time, although late summer is a little slow. I'm always looking for something that blooms in August and September. Do any of you have suggestions? Remember, it has to be tough.
