Please help! I'm new to this gardening stuff!!

Can someone please give me some advice as to how i should treat my patchy lawn. I have recently moved into the property and the garden has not been well maintained.

There are bare patches scattered all around it and it becomes straw like shotly after cutting. It looks very brown n bleak

I have put down some new grass seed and have watered it with a watering can as i do not have a hose. DO you think I would need to dig it all over and start again from scratch?

Whether or not you decide to start from scratch, Fall is really the ideal time to seed your lawn.

I wonder if you live in an area affected by drought, as much as by your lack of a garden hose...?

I live in Santa Fe which is DRY, and over the years I've encouraged the slow growing types of grass that thrive with very little water. You might want to research "grass" a bit and decide what types you would like to have.

In the spring the annual grasses come up and make my yard look Wisconsin lush... but then they die back and these great weeds, some sort of mallow, come up and sprinkle my yard with these lovely orange flowers...

i.e. there are a lot of options... for instance if you have some shade, clover could thrive... I love clover... but I don't have a shady enough place for it right now.
