I'm not even urban, I think, pretty much inner city ( if you can call my town much of a city!).
Small lot, old house, and we tend to use our space to intensively garden. We ended up with a front garden ( once upon a time front yard that was grass- water, mow, edge, repeat a lot for grass clippings only!), the back yard garden, the devil's strip that is great for a lot of herbs and squash and a niche garden on the side of the house. plus a smaller greenhouse where the porte coachere ( I think I mis-spelled that) was. Right now, the greenhouse has my washer and dryer, plus stuff stored in it- we are also re-modeling - that perpetual thing. Right now, many heirloom tomatoes, corn, several varieties of melons- both watermelon and rock melons, hot and bell peppers, chard, potatoes, herbs, several types of squash, peas and beans. |

Urban gardening tips
Urban gardening can mean anything from a pot or 2 on the fire escape to a plot in a community garden. What they all have in common is how welcome any spot of green is in the middle of concrete. Although urban gardens can take advantage of small garden design tips, there are still more way for city apartment gardeners to get the most from their space.
Vegetable gardening tips are necessary most especially for beginners. These will surely help you achieve success in vegetable gardening if ever you want to have your own. With the growing prices of vegetables in the market, it is quite practical that you are able to cultivate your own so that you can economize your spending and eat much healthier food. However, several constraints can hinder you in gardening and one example is the limited space. Don't be hindered by this. All you need to have are home vegetable gardening tips and if you are new in this area, you'll need home gardening tips for beginners. ------------------------------------- Jenilopaz Last edited by smgardener; 09-11-2008 at 06:50 PM. Getting Gardening Started in the City
Our local garden club would like to make a request to our community officials to provide & help sponsor an area of land for the purpose of our garden club members to create & encourage interest for its members & other community residents in gardening.
Would appreciate any suggestions in how to get the ball rolling. Thanks, Ann |

Downtown Riverwalk plantings
We (Kansas master gardners, et al) are undertaking some river bank plantings along public pathways with cooperation from our park department. Two of the most difficult areas will be the vertical walls created along the river bank and planting of vertical concrete walls above the river flood areas. I understand there are kits or mesh or similar that help plant on concrete walls. We would prefer evergreen leaves like baltic ivy, but want midwest species if they exist. Suggestions?

As gardeners, we all know the importance of stocking our pantries but in this economy it is fast becoming how many people will survive the transition from energy, global climate change and the economic swings we are seeing. Who would have thought 10 years ago that gardening is how we would do our part to save the world. Yes, I found that gardening is taking on a whole new meaning in that it is no longer just a passive hobby for enjoyment. It has gained in precedence as more and more people work to subsidize their food as incomes and resources decline.
I found some interesting websites for gardening methods to supplement this transition from fossil fuels and find that sharing these with like-minded gardeners will be my biggest contribution to promoting resilient communities. BackWoodsHome.com: How to do everything to get by. NoMowGrass.com: Short growing grass for low maintenance lawns. MyBackAchers.com: Resource for going zero energy. – Path to Freedom Please remember to save your seeds from good years to plant with others in the upcoming years. Your garden may not just save you from the problems we face – help it save others. Be ready to share. Peace. |

It's my impression that the concept of using raised beds was developed in larger cities hundreds of years ago, where space were limited but horse manure was vastly available, since transportation was carried out by horses. And now raised beds are used everywhere.
