Urban Garden Design Tips

Urban Gardening Help has a nice set of tips for setting up your urban garden:
Quote:
  • Mirrors are an easy remedy for small spaces. They create the illusion of more space and work well both indoors and outdoors. They can also reflect sunlight onto shadier areas. When using mirrors outdoors, make sure they are weather-resistant.
  • Painting your indoor walls or your outdoor walls and fences light shades can “open up” your space and help it feel less claustrophobic.
  • Decking, walkways, raised beds, walls, etc. are all important features. Try and use materials that go well together.
  • Create themes such window boxes and raised beds all made of the same kind of wood.
  • Small scale trellises can work great in your garden to hide walls and boundaries.
...And a whole lot more. Anyone else have good tips for urban gardening, or for starting an urban garden?

Be mindful of the mature sizes of your plants, especially those near bordering walkways and fences with your neighbors. Too many people plant young trees or vines without ever thinking about how this plant will affect their neighbors 5-10-20 years from now. It's not all bad. I have a neighbor who lovingly planted and nourished 3 beautiful banana trees planted a foot from our adjoining fence. Every stalk of banana's grew right over onto our side. He laughed and told us to take whatever grows on our end. That was before he realized none would grow on his side. I'm not sure he remembered that this specific area of my yard was a very fertile compost pile. On the other hand a wisteria he planted next to my fence ended up costing him $148 to repair the damage to the fence that the vines caused.
