winter meditations: 108+ hardy edible perennial plants
persimmon (Asian, American, Hybrid), chestut (Chinese, Japanese, American, Hybrid), hardy kiwi, arctic kiwi, jujube, mulberry, paw paw, filbert, gooseberry, currant, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, elderberry, trifoliate orange, prickly pear, freestone peach, plum, asian pear, disease resistant pear, disease resistant apple, cornelian cherry, bush cherry, sour cherry, fig, autumn olive, muscadines, grapes, cinnimon vine, ligon bery, jerusalem artichoke, yacon, butternut, heartnut, monkey puzzle, yellow horn, pecan, walnut, chilean nut, oak, aronia, blue bean, goumi, goji berry, bayberry, wild rasin, wild plum, servicberry, quince, seaberry, hazlenut, Chinese magnolia vine, wintergreen, honeyberry, Chinese edible hawthorne, rosa rugosa, bamboo, apricot, juneberry, mayhaw, melontree, sumac, passiflora, pauwloia, jasmine, Tasmania vine, spinach tree, asparagus, chilean guava, fragrant spring tree, pomegranite, medlar, groundcover raspberry, salal, kinickinnick, rhubarb, eucalyptus, highbush cranberry, daylilly, huckleberry.
Autumn is time to order your scionwood if you want some apple pear and persimmon, and by grafting them yourself you can get some rare heirlooms or disease resistant varieties at a fraction of retail cost. Order in Autumn and winter as plants sell out quick. Plants like to be planted early in the spring if not autumn. Hardy citrus may be availible if its not too late from McKenzie’s nursery so you can try the citrange and hardy grapefruit to see if you want to be the first in your neighborhood to plant some of them. If you live in warmer climates you can try kumquats, feiojas, mandarin orange, meyer lemon, loquats.
In North Carolina, sassafras grows which makes a great natural drink. It is the natural flavor of root beer. |
