Zuchinni

I live in Houston which is Zone 9, so we can plant our veggies very early. I planted zuchinni and they have big beautiful green healthy leaves and bright yellow blooms. Many of the blooms turn into little zuchinnis, but after they reach about two inches they turn yellow and fall off...what is a gardner to do?

I get the best results if I only water the soil and NOT the foliage or fruit.
This is what mine looked liked when I watered the entire plant:

How do you water your plants?

Scrapnsow,
One issue you could be having is your female flowers may not get pollinated! Next time you see a female flower open, artificially pollinated it!

Take a small paintbrush and rub it lightly on the male flower to pick up some pollen. Once you have a fair amount of pollen on the brush rub it on the stamen of the female flower. That might help out a lot!

I also live in zone 9, and here in Central Florida we get a lot of rain so there is no avoiding getting water on the entire plant, but my friends have had great success with Zucchini and I am starting to see some with my first planting!

Not a dumb question at all... But it is one that is simple to answer...

Male flowers look just like a flower, female flowers have a mini-zucchini under the flower

Male

Female

Hi there zone9garden! Thanks for posting the pictures of these flowers and pointing out the difference. I am just planning to grow some on my backyard.

I accept with information: Take a small paintbrush and rub it lightly on the male flower to pick up some pollen. Once you have a fair amount of pollen on the brush rub it on the stamen of the female flower.
