Make someone's night: dance with a Wallflower

This content is syndicated via RSS from the blog: Classic Gardening

Like the sad, overlooked potential dance partners who were named after them, the appeal of Wallflowers isn’t always recognised. Why they are spurned by so many gardeners is hard to gauge. They are very easy to grow from seed. They muster themselves over winter and then burst into flower as soon as things warm up in the spring.
That’s when so many discerning gardeners turn their noses up – because what often appears, if you have bought mixed seed or young plants, is a mess of clashing colours.
So go for one, or at most two, varieties.

I go for one, and the one I love is Cheiranthus cheiri 'Blood Red Covent Garden'. I partly love it because these seeds often seem to be given away free with newspapers and magazines. But mainly its appeal is in its deep, velvety, blood-red flowers.
The key is to get things going in August when – admittedly – most gardeners have other things on their minds. But if you do remember to scatter a packet or two of seeds over any bare patch you may have, the results will be stunning.
Last year I remembered, and this week I am reaping the benefits, with beds full of the things.
By the way, I realised where they get their name last summer on Holy Island, in the English county of Northumberland. There, a bright yellow variety grows all over the dry stone walls
There are lots more Plants of the Week here.
