The flowers on the tree come in late winter during January or February. Each flower has five petals and is one to three centimeters in diameter and are usually white, though some may have rose colored or red flowers. The leaves appear shortly after the petals fall and are oval with a pointed tip. The fruit ripens in early summer, typically June in East Asia. Every fruit is round with a groove running from the stalk to the tip of the fruit. The skin is green when unripe and turns yellow, sometimes going red.

The apricot bonsai usually lives to be nine years old, and grows to become fifteen to seventeen inches tall. They are designed to be kept outdoors like ordinary bonsai trees. The recommend way to water it is to soak it in a sink or container of water up to the trunk of the tree for approximately five to ten minutes, and then allow it to drain afterwards. If it is being watered with tap water, it is best to allow it to be watered, then to wait a few minutes before watering again. This method should be repeated several times to make sure that the apricot bonsai has received enough water to help it grow.
